Samuel Marsden Brookes born in 1816, Newington Green was an English-born American painter. He specialized in still lifes of fish and game, but started as a portrait painter and also created some landscapes. He was also a member of the bohemian grove.
As a young person, he developed an interest in art by copying works from traveling portrait artists and producing his own miniatures. in spite of his talent, his father did not give permission to art as a profession. Even so, he took some drawing lessons from James Bowman and, in 1841, became an itinerant painter.
